Trading options on Robinhood involves a slightly different process than trading stocks. Before you begin, make sure you have been granted options trading privileges in your Robinhood account. If you haven't, you can apply for it within the app or on the web platform. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to trade options on Robinhood:
-
Open the Robinhood app or web platform: Log in to your account if needed.
-
Search for the stock: Use the search bar to find the stock for which you want to trade options. Enter the company name or stock symbol.
-
Select the stock: Tap on the stock in the search results to open its detail page.
-
Access the options page: Scroll down and tap on the "Trade Options" button. This will open the options trading page for that stock.
-
Choose the expiration date: In the options trading page, you will see a list of available expiration dates. Select the desired expiration date for your options contract.
-
Select the strike price: Browse through the available strike prices for both call and put options. Call options are listed on the left, while put options are on the right. Swipe left or right to view additional strike prices.
-
Choose the type of option: Tap on either the call or put option with the strike price you want to trade.
-
Select 'Buy' or 'Sell': After selecting the option, choose whether you want to buy or sell the contract. If you're buying an option, you'll be purchasing the right to exercise the contract. If you're selling, you'll be writing the contract and taking on the obligation to fulfill it if the buyer exercises their right.
-
Input the number of contracts: Specify the number of contracts you want to trade. Each contract typically represents 100 shares of the underlying stock.
-
Select the order type: Choose your preferred order type, such as limit order or market order. It's generally recommended to use limit orders for options trading to avoid unfavorable prices due to price fluctuations.
-
Review and submit: Review your order details and tap "Submit" to place your options trade. You'll receive a confirmation once the order is executed.
Keep in mind that options trading carries unique risks and may not be suitable for all investors. Always perform your own research, understand the risks involved, and consider consulting a financial advisor before engaging in options trading.
